Want Your Blog to Stand Out from the Rest? Here’s How
Want to see some really big numbers? Check out the statistics page on the WordPress website. Those big numbers should highlight something to you: there are a lot of blogs out there. Thousands of new blogs are created every day. Heck, those stats are mostly related to blogs that use WordPress. That’s only one blogging platform!
It’s important that you do everything you can to make your blog stand out amongst this multitude. Here are some suggestions you should be considering right now.
Keep a beady eye on the competition
How are you going to know how to stand out from the rest unless you know more about the rest? It’s often said that you’ve got to know the rules before you can break them in any meaningful way. So whatever your niche is, find blogs that deal in similar matters.
What kind of content do they post? Is it opinionated? Inflammatory? Humorous? Technical? Theory-heavy? Do they engage with their readers? Are their posts short or long? What aspects of a given feature to put more focus on? Get to know the “rival blogs” as well as you can. Once you know the mold, you have a better chance of breaking out from it.
Good content, and lots of it
You know what will really make your blog stand out? High-quality content! This may sound a little harsh, but it’s true: there are millions of blogs out there, and most of them aren’t very good. They’re filled with fluff, adverts, spelling errors, and are usually abandoned after a few months. Don’t let this be the fate of your blog.
Your content needs to be great. It should be informed, well-researched, and full of personality. Don’t just fill your blog with meaningless posts just to keep the content numbers up. Having said that, you should be careful about investing in quality while completely ignoring quantity! You need to be posting new content on a regular basis. It’s a pretty hefty task when you consider the need for quality, I know. That’s why many bloggers get help. Look into freelancers, or check out this crazy long list of guest posting blogs.
Get it looking sleek
It will strike some people as weird that anyone would care about how a blog looks. After all, isn’t the content much more important than the aesthetic? Who cares if the website isn’t “pretty” or “sexy”? It’s a blog – the point is to read a bunch of words, not ogle at the pretty designs surrounding them!
Here’s where that line of thinking falters a little. Of all the types of websites out there, people spend longer amounts of time on blogs than they do any other. (Excluding, of course, social media!) There’s a lot to read, which means they have to spend longer amounts of time looking at your website. And if your website is an eyesore, it can distract from the reading process. If you’re using Tumblr, you can look into installing pre-made themes. If you don’t like the look of the themes on display, consider working with a web design agency to get your blog looking sleek.
