There are different ways to progress in the different careers out there. There are dozens of articles out there purporting to help, but how can they when they give overwhelming generic advice that you are then forced to apply to your niche. It is better finding specific advice. This article deals with health care and how you can further progress. Granted, there are hundreds of separate healthcare professions out there that someone could practice, yet there are strong overwhelming themes that apply to these professions. There are different ways to progress too. You could gun for promotion, or maybe further specialise. You must be thinking of trying something new, or moving on up, otherwise you would not be reading this article. You may have even thought about some of the points below, but they can stoke your idea bank and help you move on up. You will need to put the work in here, nothing is free in this world, progression included.

For a start, you could consider moving into a leadership role. Whatever you do now there is a likely some form of hierarchy that ensures you and your colleagues are properly managed. Look at your chosen profession and see if you could do it. It may mean more paperwork and in a more authoritarian role with less hands on work, but it could be for you and comes with the benefit of additional pay. For example, a nurse could study an Online RN-BSN Degree to move on up. There will be ways of doing so in your chosen healthcare profession. The first step is speaking to your superior and finding out what ways to progression there are. You may be surprised in that it is easier than you think. Remember, you need to be the right kind of person for this job. You will be telling people, who are now colleagues, how to do their job and even reprimanding them when they are wrong. The role isn’t for all, so pay it due consideration before making the move. Maybe you could move to a new building or area to ensure you won’t be managing old colleagues, though this isn’t always possible.

Another way of progressing isn’t through the sphere of management but instead through specialisation. There are always ways to further specialise in healthcare. You can use surgeons as an example. Some focus on brain, others heart, etc. If you find something that is applicable to you then you can progress with it and potentially make more money. Usually those who have specialised make more as their skill set is more defined. It may be a bit more boring in the long term because you will be dealing with the same issues time and time again. You will also need to study. Be sure you have the time to do this. Some time may be afforded to you during work, especially if they are happy for you to progress. However, you will need to devote time to this outside of work too.

Consider moving private if you are working for a public healthcare system. They often pay well, yet sometimes demand a higher skillset. If money is your current motivator then this is surely the right choice for you. Keep an eye out for applicable jobs and apply as they come out. Just remember, in the private sector the benefits aren’t usually as good. This means less holidays and smaller pensions. Weight it all up before making the move. If it all stacks up then go for it, perhaps a change like this is all you needed.

The ultimate decision in profession could be leaving your chosen job and go it alone. Open your own practice. This is scary beyond measure. Opening a business is never easy. In this case it will be harder, because you will be running a business while still working there full time in whatever profession you have chosen. You may need help due to the extra work. You also need to do your homework before setting up. First, consider the area. If you are a physiotherapist there would be no hope setting up a private practice somewhere close to another practice that has been there longer. Research competitor footfall and whereabouts before starting. Ensure you have the money to back you up and if approaching a bank have a stellar business plan in place so you give yourself the best chance of succeeding. You can make way more money when in business for yourself but only if you approach it with a level head and a tonne of appropriate research.
